TACOMA, Wash. - With five players in double-digit scoring, the Puget Sound Loggers cruised to a 65-50 victory over the visiting Linfield Wildcats in the Northwest Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Semi-Final Game on Thursday evening at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash. With the win, the Loggers advance to the NWC Championship game on Saturday night against George Fox in Newberg, Ore.
The Wildcats opened up the game with a bucket by Sara Burgoyne but a three-pointer by Shelby Ramirez (Pasco, Wash.) put the Loggers ahead and they never gave up the lead. Puget Sound pushed the lead into double-digits at the 11:38 mark when Allison Craven (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) ht a jumper to make it 15-5. The Loggers continued to push the lead, eventually using a Craven jumper with 29 seconds remaining to take a 21-point lead into the break, 36-15.
Linfield kept things a little more interesting in the second half but it wasn't enough to take down the NWC Champion Loggers. A jumper by Marissa Lindquist with 8:12 remaining shrunk the UPS lead to 12 points but that would be as close as Linfield would get as the Loggers used 11 second-half free throws to earn the 65-50 win to advance to the NWC Championship game at George Fox.
The Loggers were led by 14 points from junior Marissa Cain (Tacoma, Wash./Highline CC). Craven added 13 points to go with three assists and three steals while Brie Adderley (Tumwater, Wash./Western New Mexico) came off th ebench to score 11 points. Ramirez and Morgan Harter (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway) each added 10 points. Logger post Karen Chase (Yakima, Wash./West Valley) was held scoreless but was responsible for three of the Loggers five block shots.
Linfield was led by 13 points from Kate Stadeli. Brihtani Lassiter added 12 points while Burgoyne nearly collected the double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats were 16-of-18 from the charity stripe in the second half but turned the ball over 21 times in the loss.
The Loggers now turn their attention to Saturday's match-up with George Fox. The winner of that game between the NWC Co-Champions will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Tip-off with the Bruins is set for 7:00 p.m. in Newberg, Ore.
